Ten-step routines, endless serums, a new hype every month – skincare can feel overwhelming. The secret the beauty industry doesn't always tell you: an effective routine is usually surprisingly simple. Three good basic steps, carried out consistently, do more than ten products you only half use. In this article we build a routine from the basics to more extensive – so you can choose where to jump in.
The basics: three steps that always apply
Every routine, however extensive, rests on the same foundation. If you have these three steps in order, you effectively already have a good routine:
Cleanse: morning and evening, with a mild cleanser that suits your skin type
Care: a day cream and/or night cream that hydrates and supports your skin
Protect: SPF every morning as the last step – all year round
Your morning routine
The morning is about preparing and protecting: you clean the night off your skin and arm it for the day. Short and effective is the motto – a morning routine doesn't need to take a quarter of an hour.
Cleanse your face with lukewarm water and, if you like, a mild cleanser
Optional: a serum aimed at your skin concern (for example hydration or an even skin tone)
Apply your day cream
Finish with SPF – always as the last caring step
Your evening routine
The evening is about clearing up and recovering: the day comes off, and the skin gets the night to do its work. This is also the moment for more active products, because the skin repairs itself overnight and you're not heading straight into the sun.
Remove make-up and sunscreen thoroughly – with a lot of make-up in two steps (first a cleansing oil or milk, then your regular cleanser)
Optional: an active product such as retinol – built up gently, not every evening from day one
Finish with a night cream or nourishing care
The right order: from thin to thick
Not sure what order products go in? Remember one simple rule: from the thinnest to the thickest texture. Watery products first (toner, serum), then creams, and in the morning always SPF last of all. That way each product can absorb optimally without having to penetrate a thicker layer.
Exfoliating: the maintenance
Exfoliating once or twice a week helps remove dead skin cells, so the skin looks fresher and absorbs your care better. More is not better – exfoliating too often is one of the most common skincare mistakes, as we discussed in an earlier article.
When will you see results?
The skin renews itself in a cycle of roughly four to six weeks – so give a new routine at least six to eight weeks before judging the effect honestly. Immediately visible effects (such as hydration making the skin look fuller) are a nice bonus, but structural improvement simply takes time.
Home routine and salon treatments: the best of both worlds
Think of your home routine as the daily maintenance and professional treatments as the periodic major service. The routine keeps your skin in condition every day; a treatment reaches deeper, tackles specific skin concerns and keeps a professional finger on the pulse. Together they reinforce each other – and the results of a treatment also last longer on skin that is well cared for at home.
Start simple, stay consistent and only expand once the basics are in place – that's how you build a routine you'll still be sticking to a year from now. Need help choosing the right products and steps for your skin? We'll gladly help you with that during a free intake.
